The Expert: “Knowing a lot about one thing, versus knowing a bit about a lot of things”
Although having been placed on the back burner for mass production processes that have been placing value on "the quickest, cheapest and easiest", expertise and craftsmanship are having a comeback. And for good reasons: knowledge, experience, years of trial and error spanning generations of like-minded people, has created an invaluable knowledge bank that is being considered in the examination of sustainable production processes, relationships and the experience of products. Instilling the notion of care and craftsmanship, the desire for perfection, high quality materials, personalization and workmanship into the design process may sound traditional and elitist, with some editing and readjustment to filter out nostalgia, expertise is an essential part in the dialogue about sustainability.
Qualities learned:
-know a lot about one thing than a bit about a lot of things to complete things well.
-if there is the possibility and desire, make an object yours through customization. Get ready to experiment and hack.
-know how to repair or make things repair-able.
-collaborate, collaborate, collaborate to make things better.
-getting from A to B is more interesting than getting to B, and thus experiencing the from is a design focus rather than the result.
